Supporting Immigrants &

First Generation Americans

First Generation Mental Health understands the way culture influences nearly every decision - from the timing of meals to the selection of a spouse. But what if the customs from your childhood no longer feel quite right? What if immigration shattered your understanding of what “should” be? Dr. Shwayder understands these questions because she has navigated them herself. She is sensitive to the unique isolation faced by immigrants and first generation Americans - when neither the old world nor this one feel quite like home.

Here at First Generation Mental Health, Dr. Shwayder takes a systemic and culturally informed approach to care. Dr. Shwayder will incorporate your preferences for treatment style, flow of conversation, eye contact, and more to create an approach that reflects your unique nervous system. Together, we can peel back layers of cultural assimilation and envision a version of yourself that feels more true and whole.

Can we do therapy in other languages?

Currently, individual and family therapy are only available in English. Dr. Shwayder sometimes provides support in Russian, on a case by case basis. Additionally, Dr. Shwayder partners with community agencies to provide psychoeducation and group therapy opportunities in Dari, Arabic, and Russian. Please contact First Generation Mental Health for information about any upcoming events.
