Frequently Asked Questions

First Generation Mental Health follows a “pay what you can” model with a 3 tier structure. Clients self-identify their fee while recognizing that there are limited slots in the first 2 tiers. Many clients find themselves at the lower end of tier 3. The recommended fee is $100 per 50 minute session.

1. Focused on meeting basic needs: $30-$55

2. Focused on meeting basic needs with some access to stability (e.g. steady employment, own/lease car, some access to savings, medical insurance): $65-$90

3. Focused on stability with some expendable income (most of the above plus regular access to health care, ability to take annual vacation, regularly buy new items or eat out): $100-$125ence.

This fee structure is based loosely off The Sliding Scale by Alexis J. Cunningfolk.

1. How much do sessions cost?

No. At this time First Generation Mental Health is an out of network provider for all insurance companies. We are happy to provide a summary of charges (aka superbill) that you can submit to your insurance, and they may reimburse you for some of your costs. Reimbursement varies, and clients are responsible for all communication with their insurance provider(s). Regardless of insurance, please note that you are responsible for your entire fee at the time of service. Dr. Shwayder does reserve slots for Medicaid clients, so if you or your child receive Medicaid, please contact Dr. Shwayder to ask about availability.

2. Do you take insurance?

3. How do I know if this is the right place for me?

Every therapist is different and it is really important to find the right fit for you and your family. If you’re looking for a concrete set of skills or a cognitive based approach, First Generation Mental Health probably isn’t the best fit. On the other hand, if you’re hoping to experience new ways of being with yourself and/or others, let’s connect. Dr. Shwayder combines techniques from Internal Family Systems and other post-modern approaches to deepen the mind-body connection. She’ll support you in slowing down to notice those twinges, sit with tough emotions, and heal from a place of inner-security. You don’t have to be certain to get started, initial consultations are free of charge.

4. I have never done therapy before. What does a typical session look like?

A typical session involves 50 minutes of sharing space (virtually or in-person). Generally we talk, but sometimes we’ll draw, pretend, walk, breathe, or do other exercises. All these modes of expression are optional - you can always say no to any question or suggestion.

We’ll start by getting to know one another and defining a set of goals. These goals will be our north star - the light we walk toward in all our sessions. Each time you arrive, you’ll be invited to share what is on your mind and/or heart. Dr. Shwayder will use questions, reflections, and suggestions to gently guide you toward your goals.

5. My child is only 4 years old - is she too young for therapy?

There is no strict minimum age for therapy. Sometimes 3 year olds have the language abilities and attention span to make great gains in therapy. Many times young ones will want a caregiver with them at all times, and they won’t be able to focus for a full 50 minutes, but that’s not a problem here! Dr. Shwayder specializes in early childhood development, and can customize the therapeutic experience. Connect to schedule a free consultation.

First Generation Mental Health has an office in Highlands Ranch. The address will be provided during our initial consultation. We can also meet virtually from anywhere in Colorado.

6. Where is your office?

You are welcome to reschedule or cancel your session up to 24 hours before your appointment. Unless there is an emergency, you will be charged your full session fee for cancelations made less than 24 hours before our scheduled session.

7. What if I need to cancel or reschedule?

Yes. Everything shared in sessions is kept strictly confidential. There are a few legal exceptions — such as risk of harm to yourself or others — which we’ll review together.

8. Is therapy confidential?
